An Interview with Lori Scott of Sensationally Nappy

Lori Scott is the founder of Sensationally Nappy, an online t-shirt store celebrating natural hair. After being unhappy with style after style, Lori decided it was time to join the movement, and "go natural". It was a decision she made in 2014 and has never looked back. She loved everything about being natural; the head wraps, the creative hairstyles, this is when she knew she wanted a t-shirt collection celebrating natural hair.

What was your motivation to start your business?
I live in the mid west and there are not any stores in the area where I could just go pick one up.  I would have to order offline.  So that's how my business came to be.

Walk me through the step-by-step process that you went through to get to where you are today?

Getting it started was very nerve wrecking for me because you have all of those feelings going through you, wondering if anyone is going to like your designs, will they sell, just a lot of emotions. I wanted all of my designs to be original, unique and creative.  I had to design business cards, get my domain, packaging etc.  I've reached out to several different ones I've found on IG, FB, Bloggers and You tubers.  I've given many t-shirts away  just to get the word of my business out to everyone.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?
The biggest challenge I've experienced is marketing.  Getting everyone to notice my t-shirts, designs, and keeping them hot. It's been a ongoing challenge.
How did you overcome this challenge?

Getting  to different hair shows throughout the coming year and just promoting my brand.

If a young person walked up asking your advice and only had a few minutes, what would be your best advice?

The best advice I could give anyone is keep grinding, keep posting and make a many contacts as possible through networking and social media.
